Glencoe

Glencoe Train StationGlencoe is located just north of Winnetka along Lake Michigan - it has about 9000 residents and is the proud home of the Chicago Botanic Garden along its western edge.  Glencoe has a lively downtown with many retail establishments, a live theater, coffee houses, and a gourmet food takeout.

Glencoe home prices vary from multi-million dollar lakefront homes to ones priced below $500,000.  It is a bucolic village with sidewalks, large trees, an exceptional number of large parks, and an expansive public beach at the end of Park Drive.

The schools in Glencoe are top-rated as all feed into New Trier High School.  The Glencoe School District is different than the other towns in that all children stay together, moving as a group from one school to the next:

Grades K-2 go to South School

Grades 3-4 go to West School

Grades 5-8 go to Central School

Many of Glencoe's earliest built houses were summer homes for residents of Chicago and as the train was built, the homes became more permanent.  The area east of Green Bay has many ravines and hills and the streets here follow the contours of the land, while homes on the west side are laid out on a grid.

The architecture of the village is varied and spans the generations.  Earlier homes built in the 1870s and 1880s were Italianate and Victorian Gothic with many still standing today.  Glencoe boasts a total of six Frank Lloyd Wright Homes that are located in the northeast section of the town - one of which is constructed entirely of concrete.
A newer era saw construction of Tudor, Colonial, Georgian and English manor designs.  One of these homes was designed by famed architect David Adler and built for businessman Jesse Strauss.

Contemporary architecture became popular during and after World War Two with brothers George and William Keck responsible for building 26 moderately priced homes in northeast Glencoe.  Architect Greta Lederer developed the Strawberry Hill Subdivision with her popular new bi- and tri-level homes in west Glencoe.
